Community Outreach

The YWiC program began in 2006 as part of a National Science Foundation Computing grant. Over the years, it has grown into a successful and sustainable outreach initiative aimed at expanding access to computing and artificial intelligence education. Originally launched as a five-week summer camp for high school students, YWiC has evolved into a comprehensive computer science outreach program, building strong connections with local public schools and New Mexico State University (NMSU).

YWiC has expanded its efforts to introduce students to computing concepts as early as kindergarten, helping them develop problem-solving skills and prepare for future opportunities in technology. The program provides resources and support to encourage long-term engagement in computing disciplines, from kindergarten through high school and into college.

In addition to working with students in local schools, YWiC recruits and employs undergraduate computer science students, offering tutoring, mentorship, and academic support. The program continues to expand its efforts in high schools and middle schools while also supporting students in computing-related fields at the collegiate level.

With a strong foundation in the community, local schools, and NMSU, YWiC is committed to helping students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in computing and AI fields, contributing to a stronger domestic technology workforce.
